We have finally started Johnny on solid food. However, "solid food" is definitely a misnomer. For those of you who do not have children, the first food is generally rice cereal which is mixed with enough breastmilk or formula to make it only slightly thicker than a normal meal. It is supposed to run off the spoon... so really, it's just thickened breastmilk for Johnny. Using a spoon was new though, so we worked on that skill a little.
So adorable, right? Here is video of his first "solid" meal, as taken by myself and John.

Pre-Walking
Grandma Durso recently got Johnny a walker and, boy, does he love it! He loves to stand up (he can't do it on his own yet) so he really likes being in the walker. He's not doing much walking yet, but he LOVES banging on the toy that is on the walker; it's a little "DJ" station that has piano keys and a drum button and other effects. I'm sure it would make great music given a more musically inclined child, but he is my kid and thus, loves to bang on it and just make noise. It's pretty cute.

Foot in mouth
Look ma! A foot!
Johnny has discovered his feet and their deliciousness. Now at almost any opportunity, he will grab his foot and stuff it into his mouth, which is adorable, is it not?Friday, June 18, 2010
6 month doctor's visit
Johnny had his 6 month visit with the pediatrician on Wednesday and it wasn't as stellar as his other visits. Here are the stats:
Weight: 17lbs. 2 oz. - 52nd percentile
Height: 27.5in - 76th percentile
Head circumference:
Okay, I can't find the paper that had his information printed on it with percentiles and such, so I only remember height and weight, the important ones I suppose.
Now, why isn't this stellar? Well, he lost 4 oz. from his 4 month visit. That's right, he hasn't gained any weight and he has only grown 1/2 inch. (Though to be honest, the height measurement isn't exactly accurate every time.) The biggest issue is his weight. He went from being in the 92nd percentile to the 52nd. Big problem. Normally, we'd come back when he turned 9 months for another well visit, but since he didn't gain any weight, the doctor wants to see him again in 6 weeks. If he hasn't gained any weight by then, we'll have to start supplementing with formula because my breastmilk isn't nutritious enough. Talk about a blow to the ego.

Roller Coaster Kid
This kid is going to love roller coasters, much to John's delight. I am not one for roller coasters, haunted houses, or horror movies because I hate to be scared. Johnny, on the other hand, is ALL ABOUT IT. If you jump out and scare him, he'll jump and then laugh. Doesn't matter when you do it, it's funny all the time. It's one of those rare things that I've found will tickle his funny bone every time. In the video below, he was sitting on the bed (notice how well he's sitting? He's a master now.) and I was crouching out of his sight, then popping up and saying "Boo!" When I rolled back the video, I noticed that the first part is kind of backlit, so I changed angles for the next shot, but his reaction isn't as good. However, it's still cute. Enjoy.

Picnic!
Johnny LOVES being outside. Loves it. If he's being fussy, just walk him outside and the fussing stops. The outdoors are magical. However, since we spend a lot of time outside, he has this lovely farmer's tan despite my excessive application of sunscreen on his super white skin. So last Wednesday, my friend Renea and I took him to Balboa Park and had a little picnic. We gave him some toys to play with and he was a happy camper. There is nothing better than sitting on a soft blanket under a tree in beautiful scenery with good company, right Johnny?

Sitting!
Johnny can't quite get to sitting position by himself yet, but he's definitely gotten good at remaining in a sitting position if you put him there. It helps if you dangle a toy in front of him that he will reach for, otherwise he gets bored of sitting up and will just flop onto his back, his favorite place to be.

Rolling, Rolling, Rolling
Johnny can now officially roll over in both directions: from tummy to back and from back to tummy. We were over at John's friend's house yesterday when Johnny was reaching for a toy and just rolled like he'd been doing it forever. Naturally, I tried it again today to make sure it wasn't a fluke or just the situation and he did it again! So then I get out the camera and all he does is roll to his side and back again... but I'll put up the video anyway because he's cute.

Into the high chair!
Johnny doesn't like it when John and I sit down for dinner. No, really, he doesn't. It doesn't matter if we have dinner at 4:30 or 7:30, he takes offense. The only way he'll be somewhat okay with us eating in the evening is if he's sitting on one of our laps. This was a decent arrangement until recently... when he started reaching and grabbing things. Now he'll sit in my lap and grab my cup when I drink out of it or my hand when I bring food to my mouth or my plate so he can pull it closer to himself. For obvious reasons, this had to change. So we got a high chair. Yes, it's a little early, seeing as he can't sit up on his own yet, but we had the best dinner in months last night. He sat in his chair, nommed on his Sophie and nudged other toys off the tray to the ground and was a happy camper.
Seems to like it, right? He's a little small for it yet, but that's why they have this handy five-point-harness to buckle him in. Perfect!
